Pololu Valley

Dengue fever scare aside (seriously, Google “Dengue fever outbreak Big Island”), we were excited to explore the Big Island – especially the outdoors. Let’s just say bug spray became our best friend.

Thanks to a local barista at Kona Haven Coffee* in Kailua-Kona (thank you for the recommendation!), we decided to check out the Pololu Valley Lookout and trail. We were on the hunt for a somewhat easy hike with a killer view, and Pololu did not disappoint.

If you’re not in the mood for a hike, you can just drive to the end of Highway 270 and enjoy the lookout. The hiking trail is at the end of this road:

*Great spot in Kailua-Kona. The coffee was excellent and I may have inhaled an entire slice of their delicious coffee cake. Plus the waterfront view makes for an epic coffee break.

View from the top:

When you get down to the bottom of the trail, it ends at the opening of the valley and the gorgeous Pololu Black Sand Beach – definitely work the trek down.

More from the Big Island to come! (Once I eventually get around to going through the rest of my photos)…
